Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy involves talking one-to-one, with a professional therapist in an open and respectful atmosphere. By offering a safe, non-judgemental space for personal exploration and development, the psychotherapist helps clients to address issues that may feel stressful, overwhelming and even hopeless. Through this process the client can gain insight and perspective, and feel empowered to make changes to the habitual patterns and behaviours that no longer work for them.

What can I expect when I come for my first visit?

After introducing myself, I will ask you to have a seat and simply talk to me about what your current concerns are. It is normal to feel anxious about calling a therapist and to feel nervous coming to the first session. It is my job to help my clients relax, talk about themselves freely, and begin to feel better. I encourage my clients to express any concerns they have about coming to therapy, including how the process works, and to ask me anything about my training or clinical experience that may be important to them.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Professional requirements require therapists to be in supervision and to abide by child protection legislation. Hence, aside from specific questions of safety, everything that I am told in a session is strictly confidential. I will fully discuss this with every client during our first consultation.

How long will therapy last?

It is difficult to answer this question as there are many factors that may be impacting on a person’s mental health and the length of treatment is greatly dependent upon what it is that you need to work through. The development of a good working relationship between the therapist and client is a very important part of the process and so, in order to allow for this, I ask that clients initially agree to 6 – 8 sessions.

How long is each session and how much does it cost?

Sessions are 50 – 60 minutes in length and the fee is €70. I do sometimes have reduced rate slots available so please get in touch if you require a concession. The first visit is free of charge and will last about 30 minutes.

What is your cancellation policy?

In the event that you will not be able to attend your session, please let me know as soon as possible. 48 hours’ notice must be given, otherwise the full session fee will be due.

Do you prescribe medication?

I am not a medical doctor or a psychiatrist, and therefore I do not prescribe medication.
